I have been looking at sponges and how they act as a metaphor for our emotions. This involves their function of absorbing liquids as we as humans absorb everything around us, including what we see, hear, feel and smell from something as simple as stepping into a room. Our senses are also determined by the atmosphere of a place or situation and the presence that we feel we bring, whether we are unsettled by how alienated our environment is or are comforted by its familiarity. This weight that we absorb however, can take a toll on our wellbeing both physically and mentally which is what I want to convey in each of my artworks as we share many similarities with sponges. The higher level of porosity (more holes) that a sponge contains increases its absorbency, as do humans as the more we let our challenges in life affect us, the harder they become to maintain. That is why I have decided to address the theme of releasing built up emotions and turn a sponge itself into a weapon that cannot create destruction; in order to convey the frustration that comes with not being able to find release.
